The sky isn’t the limit. It’s just the beginning.
Saturday, 30th September 2017 was a day that described just this. The team of five aviators, under the guidance of Miss Nirasha, took off on an intellectually challenging journey to Sri Lankan Aviation College, Katunayake for the District Aviation Quiz ’17. It was organized by SLAC along with the District Aviation Council (DAC), that has global accreditations and works as a training arm for Sri Lankan Airlines, carrying out international aviation standards. With thirty-six other schools, both local and international, and their teams of five, it was no surprise the competition was going to be aggressive- a hundred and eighty-five competitors, five rounds, three positions, one champion.
The competition commenced at 9:30am and went on till 3:30pm, consisting of five rounds: General Knowledge, Arts Geography and History, Science and Technology, Sports and Entertainment, and Current Affairs. The content spanned from species that flew without wings to the minor hardware details of how an aircraft was designed. With clips of Emirates advertisements and the Backstreet Boys singing, the quiz master made sure that the audience and students were hooked. Despite the intensity of the competition, there was always room for hilarious acts of espionage, the battle for Mentos mints and befriending other teams. The day concluded with the awards ceremony, where we made it to the top 10.
The crew members: Pehara Ambewatta, Pehan Ambewatta, Vidusha Chandrasena and myself (Aditi Holey), led by Leon Herath, would definitely recommend any student interested in this field to take part in DAQ 2018, and join the aviation society taking place after school on Tuesdays from 3-4pm. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Miss Nirasha for joining us, we are ever so grateful to be supported by a teacher like you.
Thank you flying with us, we hope to see you next time!
