The Senior School week began on a wonderful note of celebration once again as we were able to mark various outstanding personal and team achievements by distributing much-deserved awards and medals for BSC student participation and success in a range of national level sporting activities that included: Karate and Swimming as well as many other pursuits such as Chess and Eastern Drumming. We were also able to mark the many successes of our World Scholar’s Cup Delegates by distributing their long-awaited and well-deserved medals and certificates for the participation and success in the WSC Competition in Hanoi. It is always such a pleasure to celebrate the outstanding successes of our students at a countless range of reputed activities and tournaments of national and international repute with such determination and bravery. Congratulations to you all and thank you for being the consummate and wonderful ambassadors for the British School in Colombo.

With national-level competition in mind, I must pay tribute to the talented cast and crew members who represented BSC at the annual Inter-School Drama Competition, organised by the Council for Business with Britain over the weekend. Our participating actors and crew members produces a wonderfully atmospheric performance of ‘The Intruder’ by Belgian playwright Maurice Maeterlinck. I sincerely congratulate all members of the cast and crew who worked to bring this wonderful piece of theatre to life in a haunting and memorable performance. Thank you for representing your school with such dedication and expertise. I must also thank our Head of Drama, Mr Shane, for his tireless commitment to this particular project.

On Tuesday, Dr Scarth led a very important whole-school assembly to the Senior School, reiterating the importance of the CIE Learner Attributes. Tuesday’s assembly was exploring the importance of nurturing responsible learners. With this is mind, we reflected on the importance of our learners taking responsibility for themselves as learners and for taking responsibility in upholding the ethos of the school. As students taking responsibility for their belongings, I remind all parents that all items brought to school (from exercise books, text books, kits and water bottles) should be labeled with the student’s name and Tutor Group. I thank you in advance for your support.

Returning to Drama and the performing arts, it was a pleasure to watch our Year 11 IGCSE Drama students at work on Wednesday afternoon, who performed extracts of their practical work as part of their ICCSE Drama Examination. Staging and performing live theatre is never easy and I congratulate all of our IGCSE Drama candidates for their insightful and refreshing interpretation and execution. Well done to you all and thank you presenting an engaging afternoon of theatre.

I must thank Ms Shamistha and the tireless BSC Choir who have been working very hard this term, giving up their Saturdays to prepare for the upcoming Asia-Pacific Choir Games, that are to be held in Colombo over the half-term holiday. Building on their successes as consecutive Champions at the TISSL Inter-School Choir Competition last year and the year before as well as in Portugal, I know that our Choristers and Ms Shamista are working very hard to secure their very best performances at this world-class international competition. I wish you every success!

I must thank our PTA team and the parents who hosted a special preparation meeting on Tuesday morning in preparation for BSC’s annual UN Day celebration, a fitting celebration of our international learning community. I remind patents that they are invited to contribute food items celebrating the cultural diversity of the school community for the ever-popular International Food Fair. I thank our PTA for their tireless work as well as the contributing parents and parent volunteers who are working to ensure this event is a success once again.

Friday saw the much-anticipated ‘Disco’-themed non-uniform day, organized by Mr Kevin and Key Stage 4. A colourful and imaginative array of costumes made Friday particularly bright! I applaud members of the Key Stage, who continue working alongside the Maharagama Cancer Hospital to raise much-needed funds. I thank all parents, students and staff for their most worthwhile contributions.

I hope you enjoy this edition of ‘The Lion’!

With my best wishes,

Simon Harwood
