It was wonderful to be able to begin the week by celebrating outstanding successes in a range of competitions that BSC students participated in over the weekend.
Our Debating Teams participated in the prestigious Lillian Nixon Debates, hosted by Ladies’ College, with Team A winning three out of four of their debates and just missed out making it to the Quarter Finals on Sunday. Congratulations to Avantha, Husein and Janek! BSC’s Team B had a wonderfully successful competition as Prisha, Sara and Yenuli (with Theekshana as reserve) reached the Semi Finals of the Novice Category of the Competition, securing second place in this very competitive tournament. Congratulations to you all and I thank Ms Mahum and Ms Deepa for supporting our students throughout this event.
Our Tennis players also had a remarkable weekend. In the Boy’s Competition, BSC’s Team A secured 4th place in the A Division, with team B emerging the B Division Champions! Meanwhile, we must congratulate our Girls who emerged Champions of the Inter-International School’s Tennis Tournament, beating Gateway Colombo, Gateway Kandy, Asian International School and Lyceum Wattala. This is a fantastic achievement! Congratulations to all of our players. I must thank our Tennis Coaches for their tireless support of our players.
It is a pleasure to share such remarkable achievements at these high-profile and competitive events, demonstrating as it does, once again, that BSC students’ achievements are not confined to academic success only. Well done once again to you all. I am very proud of you.
Monday also saw the arrival of the annual Computer Science Week, organised by the Computer Science Department and the Computer Science Society. I am most grateful to Ms Pathirana and her term for organizing an extensive and engaging programme of events and activities throughout the week that allowed students in all Key Stages to showcase their talents as well as to explore a range of new and exciting applications of this ever-changing science: Quizzes; a Digital Art Movie Making Competition; a Programming Challenge; a Treasure Hunt and a presentation by Guest Speaker, Mr Dhanusha Muthukumarana augmented our students’ classroom activities throughout the week. I was delighted and impressed to see our computer scientists rise to the many challenges presented throughout the week and I hope that each and every participant is proud of their achievements. Well done and thank you all for making Computer Science Week such a success once again and we look forward to next year’s exciting programme.
Monday also saw the opening of the Inter-International Schools Under 19 Basketball Tournament, organised by BSC. I wish our teams every success and I thank our players and the many students who will be supporting the event throughout. You are all wonderful ambassadors for you school. Particularly exciting is that this is the inaugural tournament to be played on the stunning new Basketball Court, a spectacular state-of-the art playing facility that offers BSC’s teams the very best environment in which to excel. Go BSC Lions!
As the Michaelmas term progresses apace, I contacted parents this week to remind them of the arrangements for the Michaelmas Term Parent-Teacher Conferences.
The Parent Teacher Conferences for Years 7, 9 and 11 take place on Thursday 12th October.
The Parent-Teacher Conferences for Years 8, 10, 12 and 13 takes place on Friday 13th October 2017.
Teachers are available between 7.30am and 4.00pm on both days. Students should make appointments with their teachers using the appointment sheet in their Student Planner. Students are expected to attend the Parent-Teacher meetings with their parents and must wear their normal school uniform. I urge all parents and students to attend and my team and I look forward to seeing you on the specified days.
It is hard to believe that this edition of The Lion marks the end of the sixth week of the new academic year! How quickly time passes and what a successful term it has been so far.
I hope you enjoy this edition of The Lion!
With my best wishes,
Simon Harwood,
Deputy Principal (Head of Senior School)
