It may be just a few weeks into their careers in the Sixth Form of the British School in Colombo, but the new batch of Year 12s have already spent much time thinking about what they will pursue after leaving the school in two years. The British School in Colombo has an excellent track record in sending students to some of the best universities in the world. However, successful applications require students who have carefully considered their options and are dedicated to their chosen course of study. This is only possible if students start planning and investigating their career paths early so that they can make sensible and considered applications when the time comes.
Alumni from BSC are currently studying across a wide range of countries and continents, and this has been reflected in the variety of universities who have visited the school with all the major countries represented already. University College London came from the UK, University College Cork from the Republic of Ireland, the University of British Colombia from Canada, Fordham University from New York, and from Malaysia, Nottingham Malaysia. Through these presentations, students have gained an insight into the application processes, entrance requirements, courses of study and lifestyle to be found in each country.
During Enrichment on Wednesday 6th September, students experienced what a university lecture would consist of, when Dr Frederique Bracoud of The University of Queensland’s School of Economics gave an insightful lecture on the economics behind the ‘Bitcoin’. Who knows, perhaps we have some future bitcoin entrepreneurs within the group?
On Friday 8th September, the British School in Colombo hosted the Austrade University fair, attended by students of both Wycherley International School and Colombo International School. At the event, students and parents were given a presentation on visa requirements for studying in Australia, followed by the opportunity to visit stalls from the various Australian universities where they could have one-on-one conversations with university representatives.
It has been a very positive start to the new academic year, and whilst university may seem far in the future, it will feel like no time at all before the deadlines start looming and applications are due.
