The Senior School set out to become a Mindful School on Wednesday 3rd May 2017 morning with its first session on Mindfulness Training. We meet every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 7:00 AM in the Lecture Hall for 20 minutes to practice Mindfulness.
This programme has been adapted to fit into the BSC School Week from the Mindful Schools Programme initiated by the Ministry of Education in National, International and Private schools in Sri Lanka.
Developing mindfulness is a brain-training technique based on using your breath to achieve mental clarity. UK Schools have initiated this programme in their school curriculum and scientific research has shown immense benefits on developing mindfulness in a person. The practice of mindfulness has been shown to calm the body down, reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol and even reduce the size of grey matter in the amygdala. By contrast, the amount of grey matter in those areas of the brain associated with attention, memory and empathy appears to have increased in those who have practised mindfulness exercises.
The students discuss mindfulness, techniques in being mindful, and how to cultivate mindfulness in their daily lives in order to focus on their academics, sports and personal lives and they practice being mindful for 10 – 15 minutes during these morning sessions.
These sessions will help students:
- Increase their self-awareness, self-esteem and academic performance
- Improve their concentration in daily activities
- Build positive relationships
- Help in dealing with stress
- Increase resilience
Do note that the teaching of mindfulness practice is devoid of any religion. This is a secular or non-religious practice. We introduce Mindfulness as a wholesome life-skill which benefits students in the classroom, when they are interacting with teachers, and other school members, and with their families, neighbours, and friends.
The programme is facilitated by a group of volunteers who have a deep commitment to mindfulness practice and who have the best interest of students at heart. Currently Miss Nirasha and Miss Champika run the morning sessions.
All students are welcome to attend on any of the days for the Mindful sessions, however, attending regularly with commitment will be greatly effective. Students attending for the first time should come five minutes early to their first session.
