It is a pleasure to welcome you all back to school for the start of the Michaelmas Term and the new academic year 2017-18. I hope that you have all enjoyed a wonderful holiday. A particular welcome to our new families and students, who join the British School in Colombo community this week. We are delighted to have you with us.
I know that you will all join me in congratulating our IGCSE and A Level candidates for their outstanding Cambridge International Examinations IGCSE and A Level results this year. The School in particularly proud of the excellent percentage of students achieving the top grades at both sets of public examinations, with 42% of students achieving A* and A grades at A Level, and 51% of students achieving A* and A grades at IGCSE. These are world class results for our students. As I write, I know that our members of our Graduating Class of 2017 are about to leave Sri Lanka to join the world’s finest academic institutions all over the world.
As many of us were relaxing over the holiday, I know that many students and teachers were very busy with various pursuits while school was closed. Our Commerce students returned from their very successful annual Commerce Camp at the highly renowned National University of Singapore; our Cricketing Lions successfully completed the inaugural England Cricket Tour, allowing them to play a series of matches against teams at prestigious venues all over England whilst making lifelong memories with their team mates and friends. Our Cricketers have, in fact continued their record of outstanding achievements since their return home to Sri Lanka! Our intrepid Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award participants have carried out a range of Adventurous Journeys as part of their on-going Award experience. Our BSC delegation for NYMUN have been meeting and training over the holiday for the upcoming Conference to be held this weekend and are determined to achieve their very best for BSC in another prestigious event. I must also thank and congratulate our World Scholars, who represented the British School at the World Scholar’s Cup event in Vietnam, securing some outstanding personal and team successes once again.
It is always wonderful to admire the dedication and determination of our students in so many pursuits and activities and I must thank all staff members and parents for their tireless support of these events and activities during the holiday period.
This week has been one of settling back in to school routines and setting targets for the new year. On Wednesday, we held our annual Induction Day for students joining Year 7 and Year 12. These important days allowed our students to complete various administrative procedures, become acquainted with key staff members who will be supporting them in the week ahead as well as to spend quality time with their new classmates. We were delighted to welcome parents to the Year 7 and Year 12 Parent-Form Tutor Meetings that followed the Induction Day events. These provided an important opportunity for parents to meet with their child’s Key Stage Coordinator and Form Tutor for the year ahead; key individuals who will be working closely with the young people in their care.
The Michaelmas Term started in earnest on Thursday with the return of all students. It is always such a pleasure to witness the pleasure our students feel as they return to school and it is a pleasure to welcome them to the new academic year. I look forward to welcoming you all to the various Parent-Form Tutor Meetings that will be happening in the days ahead for all students in the Senior School.
Welcome back to school everyone! I wish you a wonderful year.
With my best wishes,
Simon Harwood
Deputy Principal (Head of Senior School)
